What are the steps for a solarium project?

by | Jun 19, 2024

Ça y est! You’re ready to make your dream of building a solarium come true. Wondering where to start? Here are the steps to follow to realize your project for a 3-season or 4-season solarium.

First Step: Measure a room in your house

First and foremost, you need to know the dimensions of the desired solarium. The larger the room and higher the ceilings, the more materials will be required. Are you looking to expand your house with a large room that serves as both a living room and dining area? Are you considering covering an existing porch? To get an idea of the dimensions of the solarium, measure a room in your house that is approximately the size you wish to build. For instance, if you plan to install a furniture set in the room, ensure the solarium’s dimensions are sufficient by measuring the room where your furniture is located. Then verify whether the outdoor space is suitable for the desired solarium space.

Second Step: 3-Seasons vs. 4-Seasons, What are the differences?

There are several differences between a 3-season and 4-season solarium. Here are the main ones:

Seasonal Use – A 3-season solarium can be used for part of the year, specifically spring, summer, and fall. It is also the least expensive model. A 4-season solarium, on the other hand, can be used year-round.

Windows – Another distinguishing feature is the type of glass. Windows in a 3-season solarium are made of single glass or vinyl. Those in a 4-season solarium consist of double or triple thermos glass, which retains heat and prevents fogging. While a 3-season solarium can be heated in winter, significant heat loss and condensation may occur. A 4-season solarium is fully insulated to withstand Quebec winters. This is another reason for the price difference compared to a 3-season solarium.

Costs – The initial investment is higher for a 4-season solarium than a 3-season one, but its resale value will be higher as well. Adding square footage of livable space increases your home’s value, unlike a 3-season solarium, which adds no monetary value upon resale.

Floor Base – Regarding similarities, both 3-season and 4-season solariums can be installed on a foundation or on piles if allowed by your city. Some cities require foundations beyond a certain number of square feet. However, keep in mind that piles are as strong as foundations. Our piles are installed 4.5 feet underground and are frost-resistant. In both cases, it is impossible to install a solarium on a porch resting on Deck blocks, as they are not frost-resistant.

Both 3-season and 4-season solariums will attract buyers when it comes time to sell your home, as they bring in a lot of natural light.
